Session Chair:         Roderick Posey, University of Southern Mississippi

Panelists:                 Gary Siegel, DePaul University

James E. Sorensen, University of Denver

Sandra Richtermeyer, University of Wyoming

Business partners help run businesses. Partners are consulted on all major decisions. Partners are proactive with information, are focused on improving business processes, and are team leaders. The work of partners is exciting, and they are enthusiastic about what they do. Over the past ten years, accountants at many companies have made the transition from traditional roles to business partner roles. This session addresses business partner research that was completed in 2003.  The panel will (a) describe the new role that accountants play as "business partners" in corporations, (b) describe how accountants in leading edge companies have made the transition from traditional roles, (c) demonstrate the use of qualitative tools that accountants/business partners need for manipulating verbal data, and (d) discuss the implications for accounting and business school education.

Standard 15 (Management of Curricula) of the new AACSB International standards states that the curriculum management process will normally include learning experiences in statistical data analysis and management sciences (among other areas).  While most institutions cover statistics with one or more required courses, and others require an operations management course, many do not currently offer a separate required course in management science.  The panel will discuss curriculum changes that will/should be made in the area of management science to comply with the new standards and prepare students better in the quantitative methods.
