SESSION A: SYMPOSIUM: THE VIRTUAL INTERNSHIP: A VEHICLE FOR
CURRICULUM REDESIGN
Session Moderator: Michael Bourke, Houston Baptist University
Panel Members: Joan
Mileski, Houston Baptist University
Alan Yan, Houston Baptist University
Shari Wescott, Houston Baptist University
Levon Hayrapetyan, Houston Baptist University
Charles Fix, Houston Baptist University
Alexis Knapp, Houston Baptist University
Amy Wilkerson, Houston Baptist University
The
symposium will examine Houston Baptist University’s project to redesign the
undergraduate business program. Using
SAP and collaborating with partners from the energy industry, HBU is creating a
series of virtual companies and their associated value chains. Students will do internships in these
virtual companies, rotating from one department to another over several
years. These virtual rotations will
form a new organizing principle for the business curriculum. For example, a student might begin his/her
rotation through a company by hiring into the HR department, where he/she will
be exposed to industry strategy, accounting issues associated with the
company’s financial statements, the IT assets of the company, the financial
models of retirement plans, as well as an overview of the organizational structures
and business processes. After spending
10 weeks in HR, the student would move on to the Marketing department,
perhaps. This will cause the students
to do just-in-time learning, and it will cause the faculty to break down the
barriers among disciplines. As a result, there will be significant
restructuring of student-teacher relationships, creating requirements for new
types of curricular material. The panel
will present the rationale for adopting this approach, the design of the new
program, and the implementation plan.
In addition, they will examine a variety of issues such as curriculum
development, measurement and assessment, scheduling, student eligibility,
administration, use of classrooms, and IT resources.

Moving
from imperative or procedural programming to an object-oriented approach poses
a unique set of problems for faculties and students. The problems are magnified when moving from small-scale projects
to large-scale design and implementation of object-oriented systems. This panel will present five different
perspectives on identifying and addressing these issues, especially as pertains
to college level instruction in preparation for the needs of business.

MANAGING STUDENT TEAMS
Session Moderator: Jennifer Kreie, New Mexico State University
Panel Members: Jennifer Kreie, New Mexico State University
Sherry Mills, New Mexico State University
Jane Carey, Arizona State University
Cathleen Burns, University of Missouri - Columbia
Companies
are very interested in hiring college graduates who have experience working in
teams because businesses know this is needed in the workplace. Many professors have incorporated team
projects in their coursework to give students this experience. However, team projects are often challenging
to professors and dreaded by students.
Students often feel frustrated and ineffective when working in
teams. Professors struggle with
management issues: a) how to form teams; b) how to help students develop skills
for working in teams; c) how to evaluate teams as a whole; and, d) how to
evaluate individual team participation.
The
participants in this discussion panel will bring ideas, handouts, and examples
of how they address team management issues.
Some items that will be presented are: a) different approaches to
forming teams and some of the pros and cons; b) methods for developing team
skills; c) example of team evaluations; and d) examples of peer evaluations and
how they can be used to help individual and teams become more effective. A handout will be provided that summarizes
the material presented.

Client
sponsored simulation projects can provide significant benefits to the various
participants in the education process.
Clients benefit from having students model and simulate real industry
problems and challenges. Students
benefit from working and interacting with practicing professionals while
gaining valuable experience in the workplace.
Faculties benefit by developing partnerships with industry that may
present many other additional opportunities.
Finally, the practice of integrating client projects into courses
supports new accreditation goals for both engineering and business
schools. Although the
benefits
for all involved parties are great, so too are the challenges involved with
building these external partnerships.
This panel will present five different perspectives on integrating
client-driven simulation projects into simulation courses.

PANEL DISCUSSION: THE NEW ROLE OF MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANTS:
IMPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESS
SCHOOL EDUCATION
Session Moderator: Gary
Siegel, DePaul University
Panel Members: Gary Siegel, DePaul University
James E.
Sorensen, University of Denver
Corporate Executive, TBA
The role of management
accountants has changed dramatically over the past ten years. They were transformed from staff support
personnel on the periphery of decision making, to valued business partners
involved in all aspects of decision-making.
The occupation bears little resemblance to what it was before the
technological revolution. This panel will focus on what management accountants
do today as business partners, business managers, and internal
consultants. We will show how the work
continues to change and how it is likely to evolve over the next few
years. We will describe the new tools
they need to do their work. And we will
discuss the challenges that this poses to business school educators in their
efforts to prepare their students for positions in corporate and public
accounting. We will engage the
participants in a discussion about the implications of this for curriculum
content and curriculum revision. There
will be three panel members: two accounting educators and a senior corporate
financial executive.
